PRISON REFORM UNITY PROJECT DEMONSTRATION 2001

Washington State Date: July 14, 2001, Saturday Time: 1:00PM - 2:30PM

We are coming forward to speak for the unheard behind those prison walls, the PRISONERS.

On Saturday, July 14, 2000, human rights and prison reform organizations, along with families and friends of inmates will stand in solidarity outside prisons and state capitols and prisonws all across the United States in support of human rights of prisoners and their families.

Demonstration times vary at different sites, but most prison rallies will be held immediately following visitation. Issues and the manner in which they are addressed will also vary at each rally, according to the needs of prisoners and concerns of the Coordinators and participants.

The goal of this movement is to put as many protesters outside each prison as there are prisoners within it, and thousands more at each state capitol and prisons. When we can do this, our voices WILL be heard, and human rights of prisoners will become reality in America.

We will address the ISSUES of PRISONER's: SENTENCE PHYSICAL ABUSE, MENTAL HEALTH ABUSE, LACK OF MEDICAL ATTENTION and , RELIGIOUS RIGHTS ABUSED, SEGREGATION - Long Term/Effects, RACIAL OR ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION, PROTECTION FROM ABUSE BY STAFF AND OTHER INMATES, ISSUES AFFECTING THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF PRISONERS

AND LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST - DISCRIMINATION against;

1. people with MENTAL OR PHYSICAL disabilities, LACK of accessibility withing institutions to programs,

2.MINORITIES; American Indians, African Americans, Hispanics and the Asian Americans Sentence in comparison to the Caucasian person being charged with the same crime. Some examples would be unnecessary restraint or segregation of persons with mental disabilities or the minority races; failure to provide sign language interpreters when interrogating persons who are deaf; refusal to allow the use of medically prescribed wheelchairs, prosthetic devices, braces, canes, or crutches where they do not pose a security risk; and refusal to allow prescribed medication or medical treatment. 3. LACK OF SUCCESSFUL TREATMENT IN ; mental health, drug programs,

4. NO learning disabilities program since a 70% incarcerated of the 2 million in prisons have learning disabilitis; Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder,

5. Poor Psychiatric treatment while incarcerated and upon release to be become successful upon returning or locating into our communities for the prisoner and family members,

AND the last and not least for the prisoners; employment sites for all prisoners being released, late releases after day of release and lack of housing so prisoners will have a support and counseling upon release,
