Citizens for Legitimate Government (CLG: http://www.legitgov.org/), a pro-democracy Pittsburgh-based national action group, in conjunction with MoveOn.org, will hold a protest of Bush's visit to Neville Island at the Carpenter's Union Training Facility on Neville Island on Labor Day, September 2nd.
The CLG protests Bush's appearance for numerous reasons, including but not limited to: the theft of presidential election and his subsequent opposition to the national will; the numerous actions Bush has taken against unionized labor and workers since taking the White House; the unilateralist position of the administration in its rejection of the Kyoto Protocol and the repeal of the Ballistic Missile Treaty; the failure of his administration in preventing 9-11, although given numerous indications of Al Qaeda's proposed hijacking of domestic airliners for acts of domestic terrorism; his cynical use of the disaster of 9-11 for political purposes, including the erosion of our constitutionally-guaranteed rights in the nefarious and misnamed "Patriot Act;" his obvious involvement in and close ties to corporate corruption; his protection of himself, Cheney and his Enron friends from legal and corrective action; and lastly, the proposed War on Iraq without a Constitutional basis or UN Sanction.
Said Michael Rectenwald, Founder and Chair of Citizens for Legitimate Government, "Bush's appearance with the Carpenter's Union on Labor Day is the height of hypocrisy. His record on organized labor is atrocious. Bush has opposed labor since he took office, beginning with his repeal of the ergonomics legislation, continuing to his promised veto of the Homeland Security Bill due to its protections for organized labor, and including his threat to use troops against any striking International Longshore and Warehouse Union dockworkers (ILWU) in 29 major ports. This is to say nothing of his tax cut for the wealthy that has thrown the nation into 6 trillion dollar deficit, the economic melt-down that has followed on it heels, his well-known allegiance to big business at the expense of workers, his own involvement in corporate crime, and his protection from criminal prosecution of major campaign and "post-election" donors at Enron and Halliburton. Bush is anything BUT pro-labor. We will be there at Neville Island to remind Pittsburgh and the nation of that fact."
Citizens for Legitimate Government is a strategic grassroots group created by concerned, tax-paying citizens, after an activist U.S. Supreme Court abandoned its Constitutional obligations and upheld the Republican Party's efforts to eliminate the democratic process from the 2000 presidential contest. The CLG, along with many other groups, sees Bush's presidency as illegitimate. More information on the group's activities can be found on their website at www.legitgov.org.
