Fifty Shades of CIA

Fifty Shades of CIA --The Petraeus Sex Scandal Widens By Lori Price, 13 Nov 2012 Here is a compilation of recent news items in the exploding Petraeus-CIA-FBI sex scandal. [Updated 16 Nov 2012.]

Jill Kelley visited the White House THREE TIMES in last three months with her twin sister 16 Nov 2012 Jill Kelley, the Florida housewife whose complaint over threatening emails revealed David Petraeus's affair, has visited the White House three times in the past three months, it has emerged. In by far the most astonishing example of her determination to reach the top, the shrewd socialite and her twin sister, Natalie Khawam, were invited to two 'courtesy' meals in the Executive Mansion mess hall as a guest of a White House aide, an Obama administration official has revealed. She met the mid-level aide through her work with MacDill Air Force Base near Tampa, where she also rubbed shoulders with the military's top brass, including General Petraeus. On one further occasion, she received a White House tour with her family, the official added.

Paula Broadwell Stripped of Secret Clearance Amid Petraeus Scandal 14 Nov 2012 Paula Broadwell, the author suspected of carrying on an affair with former CIA director David Petraeus, has been stripped of her military security clearance after a federal probe alleged she was storing classified military material at her home. "Appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken," said Army spokesman George Wright of Broadwell, an Army reservist and West Point graduate... A source familiar with the case told ABC News that Broadwell admitted to the FBI she took documents from secure government buildings. The government demanded that they all be given back, and federal agents descended on her North Carolina home on Monday night in pre-arranged visit.

Jill Kelley Loses VIP Privileges at Military Base 14 Nov 2012 Jill Kelley, the Tampa socialite at the center of the Petraeus scandal, has lost the privilege of visiting MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa without an escort. The base is home to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), and Kelley, who enjoyed rubbing shoulders with top military brass, had been granted unescorted access to the base under a program initiated by the Air Force unit that runs operations at the base. A Defense official confirms to ABC News that Kelley participated in a base program known as the "Friends of MacDill" where she was placed on a master list that allowed her to clear security when entering the base. A person must be nominated to enter the program, and must pass a background check by the wing's security office.

Veteran F.B.I. Agent Helped Start Petraeus E-Mail Inquiry 15 Nov 2012 The F.B.I. agent who helped start the investigation that led to the resignation of David H. Petraeus as C.I.A. director is a "hard-charging" veteran counterterrorism investigator who played a major role the foiled millennium terrorist plot in 1999, colleagues said on Wednesday. The agent, Frederick W. Humphries II, 47, is also described by former colleagues as relentless in his pursuit of what he sees as wrongdoing, which appears to describe his role in the F.B.I. investigation involving Mr. Petraeus. Suspecting that the case involved serious security issues and was being stalled, possibly for political reasons, a suspicion his superiors say was unjustified -- he took his concerns to Congressional Republicans.

Sources: Paula Broadwell warned Gen. Allen against 'seductress' Jill Kelley 14 Nov 2012 As Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta offered guarded support Wednesday for Gen. John Allen, new details emerged about correspondence the general had with a Florida woman intertwined in the David Petraeus sex scandal. "No one should leap to any conclusions here," Panetta said at a news conference in Australia. He added that Gen. Allen, who is still in command of some 68,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, "certainly has my continued confidence to lead our forces and to continue the fight." Allen had been tapped to be next commander of U.S. European Command and the top NATO general, but his confirmation has been placed on hold due to the investigation.

Sources close to investigation describe correspondence between Kelley and General Allen like 'phone sex' --Broadwell had substantial military documents stored in her home 14 No 2012 Harassing emails sent by Paula Broadwell, the biographer-turned-mistress of David Petraeus, to her perceived love rival, Florida socialite Jill Kelley, contained confidential information about the CIA boss's movements, a law enforcement source has revealed. After Kelley contacted the FBI, agents launched a massive in-depth investigation into who was sending the emails because they shared this detailed information that was not publicly available. The catty emails, which told Kelley to 'back off' from Petraeus, were sent to Kelley from several fake email addresses. In order to find who had confidential information about Petraeus's whereabouts, the FBI obtained an administrative subpoena, and traced them back to Broadwell. In the course of the investigation, they also unearthed emails indicating the affair between Broadwell and Petraeus, leading to his resignation on Friday. The new details of what uncovered Petraeus's months-long relationship with his biographer come as the FBI continue to search military documents Broadwell admitted to stashing in her home. Security officials have revealed she had 'substantial' classified information on her computer which should have been stored more securely.

David Petraeus scandal: Jill Kelley 'tried to halt investigation' 14 Nov 2012 Jill Kelley, the Florida socialite who sparked the FBI inquiry that cost David Petraeus his job and threatens the career of Gen John Allen, tried to halt the investigation after realising what it might disclose. Mrs Kelley, who prompted the investigation after complaining of harassing emails that turned out to be from Mr Petraeus's mistress, Paula Broadwell, is understood to have asked the FBI to drop it in the summer. News of her change of heart came as it emerged that Mrs Kelley, a "social liaison" for the US military, made repeated calls to the police this week asking them to remove journalists from outside her house. Wielding a title given to her by the South Korean government, she told dispatchers: "I'm an honorary consul general, so I have involability [sic]," adding: I don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well".

Gen. John Allen also helped Jill Kelley's sister during custody battle 13 Nov 2012 Both Gen. David Petraeus and Gen. John Allen intervened in the same nasty child custody battle involving Natalie Khawam, the “psychologically unstable” twin sister of Jill Kelley, whose bombshell claims of being threatened by Petraeus' lover led to the top spy’s resignation last week, the Post has learned. Allen, the four-star general top commander in Afghanistan, was revealed last night to have exchanged thousands of pages of of emails with Kelley, who went to the feds after receiving threatening e-mails from Paula Broadwell, the married mistress of Petraeus. A judge noted in the file that Khawam "has attached letters from Gen. David H. Petraeus averring to her ability to appropriately parent the child, and is prepared to present corroborating testimony at trial."

Revealed: FBI agent friend of Florida housewife at center of Petraeus scandal who sent topless pictures to her 'went rogue' after being told to 'stay the hell away' 13 Nov 2012 A federal agent who sent topless pictures of himself to the woman at the center of the Petraeus and General Allen scandals was told to 'stay the hell away' from the investigation but took it upon himself to 'nose around', it was revealed today. After receiving a half dozen harassing emails from an anonymous account - but later linked to Petraeus's mistress Paula Broadwell, Jill Kelley, the Florida woman who served as a volunteer social liaison officer at the Tampa military base, contacted a male FBI agent that she knew and had previously worked with. During a prior exchange, when the agent was trying to establish a friendly relationship with the married mother-of-three, he sent her shirtless photos of himself adding to questions over his true intention behind going above-and-beyond his work duties to help her with the threats.

Top US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Allen, implicated in Petraeus scandal --Pentagon: FBI found 20,000 to 30,000 pages of 'inappropriate' emails between General Allen and Jill Kelley 13 Nov 2012 The US head of NATO forces in Afghanistan is under investigation in connection with the sex scandal that saw CIA director David Petraeus resign. Gen. Allen exchanged "inappropriate" emails with a woman linked to Petraeus. The FBI has found 20,000 to 30,000 pages of allegedly inappropriate emails between General Allen and Jill Kelley, says the Pentagon. Mrs. Kelley was implicated in the Petraeus affair after telling the FBI she received threatening emails from the former CIA chief's mistress, Paula Broadwell.

Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan investigated for emails to Petraeus friend 13 Nov 2012 In a new twist to the Gen. David Petraeus sex scandal, the Pentagon said Tuesday that the top American commander in Afghanistan, Gen. John Allen, is under investigation for alleged "inappropriate communications" with a woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom Petraeus had an extramarital affair. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in a written statement issued to reporters aboard his aircraft, en route from Honolulu to Perth, Australia, that the FBI referred the matter to the Pentagon on Sunday. Panetta said that he ordered a Pentagon investigation of Allen on Monday.

New scandal: FBI agent BANNED from investigation into Petraeus's affair after he 'grew obsessed' with a woman at the center of the probe and sent her shirtless photos 12 Nov 2012 A federal agent was pulled off the investigation into David Petraeus's illicit contact with Paula Broadwell when the agent reportedly became obsessed with another woman involved in the probe, The Wall Street Journal reports. The FBI found that the agent had sent shirtless photos of himself to Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who reportedly received a half dozen emails from Broadwell that warned Kelley to stay away from Petraeus. The emails were sent from anonymous accounts. That same agent was a friend of Kelley's and he had started the FBI investigation into the emails -- which eventually led to Petraeus's downfall -- after Kelley came to him for help upon receiving the anonymous threats.

FBI Agent in Petraeus Case Under Scrutiny 12 Nov 2012 A federal agent who launched the investigation that ultimately led to the resignation of Central Intelligence Agency chief David Petraeus was barred from taking part in the case over the summer due to superiors' concerns that he was personally involved in the case, according to officials familiar with the probe. After being blocked from the case, the agent continued to press the matter, relaying his concerns to a member of Congress, the officials said. New details about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the case suggest that even as the bureau delved into Mr. Petraeus's personal life, the agency had to address conduct by its own agent-who allegedly sent shirtless photos of himself to a woman involved in the case prior to the investigation.

FBI search Petraeus mistress Paula Broadwell's home 12 Nov 2012 The Federal Bureau of Investigation is searching the home of the woman who had an extramarital affair with former CIA director David Petraeus. FBI spokeswoman Shelley Lynch confirmed to the BBC on Monday night that agents were at Paula Broadwell's house in Charlotte, North Carolina. The FBI spokeswoman told the BBC that agents arrived at the Broadwell home in the Dilworth neighbourhood of the city just before 21:00 local time (02:00 GMT).

Official: Broadwell e-mails to Fla. woman sparked Petraeus probe 11 Nov 2012 A senior U.S. military official says the author who had an affair with David Petraeus sent harassing e-mails to a woman who was the State Department's liaison to the military's Joint Special Operations Command. The official told the Associated Press that 37-year-old Jill Kelley in Tampa received the e-mails from Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell that triggered an FBI investigation. The official, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly, spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. Another person who knows Kelley and Petraeus confirmed their friendship and said she saw him often. [A war criminal taken down by a sex scandal - I love it!]

E-mail threats triggered probe of Petraeus, officials say 10 No 2012 The collapse of the dazzling career of CIA Director David H. Petraeus was triggered when a woman with whom he was having an affair sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him, according to three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode. The recipient of the e-mails was so frightened that she went to the FBI for protection and help tracking down the sender, according to the officials. The FBI investigation traced the threats to Paula Broadwell, a former military officer and a Petraeus biographer, and uncovered explicit e-mails between Broadwell and Petraeus, the officials said.

David Petraeus resigns as CIA director 09 Nov 2012 CIA Director David H. Petraeus has resigned, bringing a surprisingly abrupt end to his brief tenure at the agency as well as his decorated career in national security. Petraeus sent a letter to President Obama on Friday indicating that he was stepping down, citing an extramarital affair... Michael J. Morell, who served as Petraeus's deputy at the CIA, is serving as interim director, officials said.

Petraeus Quits Post; Evidence of Affair Was Found by F.B.I. 10 Nov 2012  David H. Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency and one of America's most decorated four-star generals, resigned on Friday after an F.B.I. investigation uncovered evidence that he was carrying on an extramarital affair. Mr. Petraeus issued a statement acknowledging the affair after President Obama accepted his resignation and it was announced by the C.I.A. He had offered to resign on Thursday when he informed Mr. Obama about the affair, White House officials said. Government officials said that the F.B.I. had investigated whether a computer used by Mr. Petraeus had been compromised. In the course of that inquiry, federal investigators discovered the relationship, officials said. [Instead of searching for evidence of Petraeus's affairs, why not look into his war crimes?]
