Iconic 'Door Tree' in Hamden cut down in act of 'saddening' vandalism

Iconic 'Door Tree' in Hamden cut down in act of 'saddening' vandalism | 19 July 2019 | (CT) A living landmark that had been featured in "Ripley's Believe It or Not" was destroyed in a senseless and "saddening" act of vandalism, local and regional officials said Friday. The Door Tree, a natural archway formed by a white oak, was cut up and left in the woods where it had stood since the mid-19th century, Hamden Municipal Historian Dave Johnson said. The vandalism was discovered Wednesday afternoon, Johnson said, when a person who could not find the tree in the town's Mount Carmel section called him.
