Is America's safety being "contracted out"? --by Jane Stillwater, CLG contributing writer
"Be the best that you can be," one recruitment slogan says -- and 40,000 would-be US immigrants wholeheartedly agree. They fight as mercenaries on the front lines in Iraq for the promise of a green card. Our "Lean Green Fighting Machine" is being contracted out.
"I cannot tell a lie," said George Washington, the leader of America's army in 1776. But who leads our army now? It is led by Washington bureaucrats who have never served a day in their lives. It's not the Pentagon or Congress or even we taxpayers who leads the U.S. Army now. Leadership has been contracted out.
"The U.S. Army is the best-trained, best-equipped army in the world." Who trains it? Who equips it? And for that matter, who finances it, deploys it, chooses the battles it will fight and the enemy it will attack? It's not the Pentagon. It's not Congress. The United States Army is being contracted out.
For most of us working stiffs, "I pay your salary. You work for me," is just a fact of life. So. Who does the U.S. Army work for? Who pays its salaries? Who holds its contracts? And in a pinch -- such as the possible cancellation of the 2004 elections -- whose orders will it be forced to obey?
